Each year's end, the Genesian Players honor their
outstanding members at a banquet called Geni Nite. ( Night was purposely
misspelled so that it would balance Geni on the program.)
Geni is a shortening of the word Genesians. The logo at the top of
this page is a picture of the medallion placed on the top of the Geni
that the Players receive.
The first award ever given for Best Actor went to John Pardue in
1966. It was vaguely similar to the "Oscar" and was
about two and a half inches high. The award was the
only Genesian award given and it was given at Academics
Awards Night. Seeing that the award was lost among all
the other awards, The moderator asked for permission to
have Geni Nite. The next year the players had the
first Geni Night in the new Band Room and presented all
the awards. This awards were now 5" high and were
engraved with titles such as Best Male/Female
Technician, Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting
Actor/Actress, Most Versatile Male/Female, and
Outstanding Genesian Male/Female. Since then, the
awards have remained basically the same with the
addition of Outstanding Newcomer.
The we got the idea for having our own Geni. The Geni was first
modeled after a Genesius medal sold by the National
Catholic Forensic League. Fearing that we were breaking
copyright laws, we designed our own logo. The design by
Mr. Guajardo was executed by Johnny Lincoln, class of
66, and was first presented at the twenty fifth
reunion. It shows St. Genesius sitting on a stage
holding the masks of Melpomene (Muse of Comedy) and
Thalia (muse of tragedy). Genesius himself is listed in
the Butler's Lives of the Saints as Genesius the
comedian. Our history of Geni Nite begins in 1992, but
we are in the process, a slow one of getting all the
awards listed.
If there are any Geni
Award recipients who are not listed for any year, please
write to us and tell us at
